Lexical Analysis Level 1 is a very detailed series of steps designed to teach and learn what is needed to study the meaning of words and their usage in Scripture. Chapters 1-16 of How to Use Greek & Hebrew Study Tools takes the student through each step of the process four times. At first, the student is directed through each step using a Greek verb as an example and model of the process. After analyzing a verb, the student then uses the same approach with a Greek noun as the example. These two examples emphasize the importance of understanding the characteristics and attributes of each different part of speech being analyzed. For verbs, important attributes are tense, voice, person and number (refer to the textbook for discussions of each of these attributes). For nouns, important attributes are function (subject/object) and number. In each example, these characteristics and attributes of verbs and nouns are discussed in terms of the verb and noun systems of New Testament Greek. For example, Greek uses different names for its verb tenses and specific names for noun functions, called case. After treating the Greek noun, a short discussion follows for other parts of speech: adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions.
After completing the analytical process twice in Greek, the steps of Level 1 analysis turn to Old Testament Hebrew. The process again uses a verb and then a noun with discussions about Hebrew characteristics and attributes of the Hebrew verb and noun systems.
